About Us
It all began in the 1940's when New York designer Gertrude Davenport took a piece of white terry cloth, draped it sarong-like around a woman's figure, closed it with a top and side button, and christened it ''the Wraparong''. In 1947, Miss Davenport was granted a patent number for her design, which was one of the earliest granted in the fashion industry. Today, her patent is in the Costume Institute collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as an important example of the evolution of American Loungewear.
With this simple design a fashion trend was born. The trend grew into a whole line of comfortable, stylish terry cloth apparel. And, its success launched an entire mail order catalog business. The Tog Shop issued its first catalog in the early 1950's.
In the fall of 2005, The Tog Shop was acquired by Appleseed's, a Massachusetts based company, of over 60 years. Appleseed's features specialty apparel through distinct catalogs, retail stores and the Internet.
Today The Tog Shop offers updated classic apparel for mature women who value style, quality and comfort in their clothes, and who appreciate the highest levels of attentive and personal customer service.
